Users of the Facebook Messenger app on Android and iOS phones will now be able to add voice messages to messages they are sending to their friends, the social network has revealed.
In an update to the Facebook Messenger App that rolled out overnight, Facebook revealed that users can now send a quick voice message to their friends via Messenger on iOS and Android phones.
Users open up a new message and tap the ‘+’ button, which now adds the ability to ‘Record Voice’, as well as attach a photo, take a picture or use emoticons in a message.
The new capability kind of reminds me of those ‘push to talk’ functions on feature phones of a few years ago or the ‘walkie-talkie’ devices some of us had as kids.
You just hold down the button and record your message and release the button when you’ve said what you want to say.
It’s a really interesting addition to Facebook’s services that may or may not endear the social media giant to mobile operators who are seeing their voice revenues declining and are trying to replace lost revenues with revenue from data services.
