Salary reports shared on Glassdoor over the past 12 months show that Google ranks highest among 15 tech companies in the US for the average salary paid out to software engineers.
Glassdoor, a jobs and careers community, provides a look at the inner workings of companies. Salary data from the site comes from anonymous reports shared by current and recent employees.
Google is shown to pay the most for software engineers at US$128,336, followed by Facebook at US$123,626. Google is ahead of Facebook for the second year running but the 1bn-strong social network appears to be closing the gap.
These online giants were followed by Apple, which pays an average salary of US$114,413 to its software engineers, followed by eBay paying US$108,809 and Zynga paying US$105,568.
Each of these salaries is above the national average for software engineers in the US, which is US$92,648 (based on more than 5,000 salary reports). This figure is up 2.5pc since last year.
Of the 15 tech companies on Glassdoor’s list, only two pay below the US national average: IBM (US$89,390) and Intel (US$92,194).
