Today we continue our countdown of Ireland’s top jobs announcement stories of 2012. It was the year companies in sectors that are thriving despite the downturn – technology, science and pharma – created jobs in their organisations, ranging from multinationals to start-ups.
Agri-food and food innovation company Kerry Group, for example, announced 900 jobs, betting giant Paddy Power proclaimed 800 new jobs, and financial services giant Northern Trust revealed it would be hiring to fill 400 positions.

20 – Energy developer Element Power to create 13,000 wind-farm job opportunitiesGlobal renewable energy developer Element Power has announced that National Grid UK, the operator of the UK electricity network, has confirmed its Irish operation has been awarded a ‘firm’ grid connection of 3,000 megawatts. Element Power said the grid offer means it will be able to progress its Greenwire wind-farm projects in Ireland, resulting in the creation of around 10,000 development and construction jobs and up to 3,000 long-term jobs down the line. According to Element Power, the offer from National Grid UK is the first such UK connection offered to an Irish renewable energy exporter. |

19 – Laya Healthcare to create 100 jobs in CorkLaya Healthcare, formerly Quinn Healthcare, is to create 100 new jobs at the company’s call centre in Cork to support the firm’s expansion and the launch of a new cardiac screening initiative. The new cardiac screening service called HeartBeat is aimed at tackling sudden adult death syndrome (SADS), which takes the lives of two young people every week in Ireland. |

18 – Abbott investing €85m in Sligo facility, to create 325 jobsHealthcare company Abbott will invest €85m into expanding its Sligo pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, which will create about 175 highly skilled jobs and 150 temporary construction jobs in the process. This will offer extra space for manufacturing operations to support Abbott’s future pharmaceutical pipeline in therapeutic areas of virology, oncology and nephrology. It will provide additional capacity in Abbot’s global pharmaceutical manufacturing network. The expansion of the facility will be completed in 2014 and the investment is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. |

17 – Datalogic to create 30 jobs at new European HQ in DublinA division of the Datalogic Group is to create 30 new jobs in Dublin with the establishment of a new EMEA HQ, shared service and customer management centre in Dublin. As part of an IDA Ireland-supported investment, Datalogic ADC, will create several immediate jobs before eventually reaching 30 people. |

16 – Deloitte seeking 200 graduates for its Dublin, Cork and Limerick offices in 2013Business advisory firm Deloitte is seeking 200 graduates to fill an initial three-and-a-half-year contract at its Dublin, Cork and Limerick offices. As well as this, the company has 80 openings for experienced professionals. In terms of the graduate roles, Deloitte said the 200 positions will be across all departments, including audit, tax, consulting, corporate finance and enterprise risk services for an autumn 2013 start or, for students who go on to complete a post-graduate course, an autumn 2014 start. |
