Three has made a €38m contract with BT to see BT’s fibre network rolled out across Ireland, letting Three customers access up to 100MB per second broadband speeds.
The network will be rolled out to support 1,000 sites serving Three’s existing customer base and more than 200 new mobile sites. These sites are located across Ireland, including Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.
The rollout of this fibre network will take place over 18 months and will allow Three to deliver up to 100MB per second broadband speeds for Irish consumers.
BT Ireland has provided transmission solution to Three over the last seven years. Last year, it developed a Total Transmission Solution which is ready for LTE. This development involved the expansion of fibre-based access transmission into Three’s Radio Access Networks, allowing for these high broadband speeds.
The enhanced broadband service will give Three customers a larger bandwidth capacity and improved mobile broadband quality.
“As Ireland’s largest high-speed mobile network, Three has invested more than €800m in infrastructure in Ireland to deliver much-needed voice, text and broadband services,” said Robert Finnegan, CEO of Three.
“The smartphone economy is driving huge demand for data services and analysts expect more than 340m smartphones to be sold this year worldwide,” said Finnegan.
