Alcatel-Lucent and P&TLuxembourg have launched what is believed to be the fastest data network in Europe consisting of a 100Gbps IP connection between Frankfurt and Luxembourg.

Alcatel-Lucent has provided P&TLuxembourg with its converged backbone transformation (CBT) solution, a combination of IP and optical technologies that will help the operator to improve the performance, reliability and operational efficiency of its network, while reducing costs.

It comprises:

·        The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) with 100G optical coherent technology which takes advantage of unique Bell Labs silicon innovations to support 100Gbps on each of the 88 wavelengths of an optical fibre.

·        An Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR) provides 100G Ethernet (100GE) interfaces that deliver highest speeds without compromising the service capabilities required for business, residential, mobile or government users, as well as for IP peering.

Stephen Carter, president of Alcatel-Lucent EMEA and the architect of the Digital Britain Act, said: “In this period of economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever that European institutions and businesses have access to world-class data networks – the lifeblood of the global economy.

“This deployment of 100Gbps technology puts P&TLuxembourg in an ideal position to support Luxembourg’s economic activity and collaboration throughout the region,” Carter said.
