Free Wi-Fi now available in Tesco stores across Ireland

Tesco shoppers are being given free Wi-Fi access in stores across Ireland following a deal that has been reached between the supermarket and BT Ireland.

To access the service, smartphone or tablet users just need to select ‘Tesco Wi-Fi’ or BT in their Wi-Fi settings.

The free service has been fully rolled out to Tesco Extra, Super and Metro stores across Ireland.

The BT Wi-Fi service will allow customers to download Clubcard vouchers, obtain product and pricing information, browse recipes, and take advantage of the latest in-store offers much more quickly than before.

“So far, we have Wi-Fi-enabled 113 stores,” said Geraldine Casey, personnel and IT director at Tesco Ireland.

“We look forward to rolling the service out to our Express stores in the near future.”

Casey added that the introduction of this Wi-Fi service is a natural platform to link Tesco’s expanding online service.

Tesco is the largest online retailer in Ireland and its home shopping service can now reach 86pc of the population, she said.

Consumers expecting free Wi-Fi

BT Ireland managing director for business Shay Walsh said consumers are coming to expect free Wi-Fi in venues, from cafés to pubs, to airports and shops.

“From retailing to banking, customers expect the same connectivity in high-street stores, cafés and bank branches as they get in their homes or workplaces.

“The BT Wi-Fi partnership with Tesco gives customers the connectivity they expect.

“It also creates a platform for Tesco to further bring the in-store and online shopping experience closer together for the benefit of its customers,” Walsh added.
