The iPad 2
Apple’s next tablet computer, the iPad 3, is tipped to launch on 7 March rather than 29 February’s leap year date as originally rumoured. The new tablet is expected to be powered by a quad-core chipset and 4G LTE network capabilities, according to the latest set of rumours.
The reason why people have so far seized on the 29 February or 7 March dates is because they are both Wednesdays, Apple’s traditional day for launching new hardware.
Again – let’s be clear – only Apple really knows what the big reveal will be, but here are a few of the expectations doing the rounds:
- Retina display – the very Retina technology that gives crisp, clear HD quality video and photography on the iPhone 4 and 4S is expected to be included on the iPad 3. In this case, the display is expected to be 2,048 x 1536
- It will come with a quad-core chipset – the iPad 3 is expected to be more powerful because it will feature quad-core Apple A6 system-on-a-chip
- It will be thicker – because of the enhanced display and power-hungry quad-core chipset, the iPad 3 is widely acknowledged by rumour mongers and fanboys to be thicker than its slimmed down iPad 2 predecessor. This is because device will have to be capable of a battery life equal to, if not better than, its predecessors.
Then again, wouldn’t it be funny if Apple trumped everyone’s expectations and decided to come out with an iPad 2S, perhaps a souped up version of the iPad 2 with an add-on capability like Retina?
