Gizmodo Australia claims to have come across a confidential document containing detailed information and specifications for Google’s tablet computer, expected to be revealed at the company’s I/O developer conference later this week.
The training document discovered by Gizmodo Australia says the device will be called the Nexus 7 and will feature a 7-inch 1,280 x 800 IPS display, 1.3GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB RAM and GeForce 12-graphics.
The document also says the device will operate on Android Jelly Bean 4.1 and is expected in two sizes: 8GB memory for US$199 and 16GB memory for US$249.
This price point will put the Nexus 7 in line with Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which is what some are seeing as the main competitor for this device, not the iPad.
Wi-Fi connectivity will come as standard, as will NFC capabilities, and the device detailed in the document has a 1.2MP front-facing camera (nothing on the front) and a battery life that can last up to nine hours.
Asus is listed as the device’s manufacturer and it is rumoured to be released in Australia in July.
The truth of it all is that we don’t know if these specs are real or fake and we won’t probably won’t know until Google – we expect – reveals a tablet at its developers conference. A Google Nexus tablet has been rumoured for months and many of these specs also appear on other reports, so chances are we are getting closer to the real thing.
Right now, Google is under pressure to produce something to rival the announcements of Microsoft’s Surface tablet and Apple’s MacBook Pro with Retina display.
