The Galaxy Note II from Samsung

Samsung’s chairman JK Shin has confirmed the electronics giant is prepping an 8-inch Galaxy Note 8 device to be unveiled at the forthcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Samsung has also begun kicking RIM when it is down, with new ads sending up the eponymous BlackBerry handset.

The new Galaxy Note 8 – clearly leaping from the ‘phablet’ to what is an actual tablet device – is expected to feature Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS and a 128 x 800 display.

According to news wire iNews24, the new device will also come with a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM and will come in 16GB and 32GB storage configurations.

According to the rumour mill, the Galaxy Note 8 will be powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos processor.

The Mobile World Congress will take place from 25-28 February.

The most recent device in the Galaxy Note family is the Galaxy Note II.

Samsung is trying to get the business world to take Android seriously

In related news, Samsung has just put out a new video ad that in the same spirit as its barrista/hipster ads berating the iPhone is taking the mickey out of the BlackBerry device family.

It seems Samsung is astonished – no, actually outraged – that there are those in the business world who are clinging on stubbornly to their BlackBerrys.

While it is novel that a company that has been as successful in the smartphone world as Samsung would be troubled by what at this stage should seem like a trivial annoyance, nevertheless I can’t shake my conviction that it is venting its spleen at the wrong company.

Android’s biggest competitor in the corporate smartphone world isn’t the BlackBerry ecosystem, it’s the iOS ecosystem.

The ad appears to be attempting to show that dynamic start-ups are getting more done on Android devices – preying on the buttoned-up corporate world’s (so far) unspoken fears that in the time of BYOD (bring your own device) they may be out of touch with productive yearnings of their hip, young employees.

Yeah, whatever. Well, it only went live today and at the time of writing had close to 25,000 views. Check it out:
