It’s the start of St Patrick’s Day weekend and so we’re rolling out memes to get you into the spirit of the day honouring the man said to have driven snakes out of Ireland and taught Christianity to pagans using a shamrock many years ago. Now, a website is aiming to drive out references to ‘Patty’s Day.’
We have all probably heard of 17 March being referred to as ‘Paddy’s Day’, which is acceptable, or ‘Patty’s Day’, which is not, as the website Paddy, Not Patty points out. Here’s why:
Paddy is derived from the Irish name for Patrick, Pádraig. Patty is a derivative of the woman’s name Patricia. “Or a burger, and just not something you call a fella,” the website says.
