Apple is reportedly seeking to trademark the word ‘iWatch’ in Japan, further fuelling rumours of an iOS-based connected wristwatch.

According to Bloomberg, a filing with the Japan Patent Office on 3 June that was made public last week seeks trademark status for iWatch, which has been categorised as a handheld computer and watch device.

Apple has not yet commented on the matter, but rumours that the iPhone-maker is working on a wearable tech device have been circulating for months now. In February, sources claimed that 100 product designers had been assigned to work on a smartwatch that would interact with other iOS devices.

Smartphone rival Samsung has already confirmed it is developing a smartwatch, while Sony has just announced its second generation, the Android-based SmartWatch 2. Google is also rumoured to have a smartphone-connected wristwatch on the cards, and many – including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak – have cited connected wearable devices as the next big thing in tech.

Having previously run into costly trademark trouble with both the iPhone and iPad brand, Apple would do well to have iWatch secured ahead of its reveal.
