Google has made its Google Play Movies service available to users in Ireland, allowing them to either stream or download movies to their devices.
Play Movies offers films from 20th Century Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros and others.
Availability in Ireland was spotted by The Sociable blogger Piers Dillon-Scott last night, when he tweeted the addition of the Movies menu to the Play store as observed on his smartphone.
Sure enough, any Android user opening up the Play Store on their mobile device today will be welcomed with the announcement, ‘Movies have arrived on Google Play!’
Clicking through to Google Play Movies, users will see new release highlights, such as The Lego Movie and The Grand Budapest Hotel available to rent or buy in standard or high-definition formats. Users can watch these films on their device of choice and can even start watching on one device and pick up where they left off on another.
Users can browse by studio, top-selling, new releases or genre to find something to watch. For iOS users, there’s a standalone Google Play Movies app available from the App Store, while desktop users can visit the full Play Store website. Prices range from €2.50 rentals to €14 to buy the latest and most popular releases.
Some films, such as Captain Phillips and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, are available at a discounted price as part of promotional deals in honour of the Irish launch.
