A paper on the semantic web that was co-authored by researchers at NUI Galway’s Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) in 2005 has been awarded the most influential paper in the seven-year history of the recent Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC), an annual conference held in Europe that focuses on next-generation web technologies.
Entitled Towards Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities, the DERI paper was published in 2005, and has been cited more than 170 times since then.
Semantically interlinked online communities (SIOC) involves looking at methods for interconnecting social web platforms such as forums, blogs and microblogs to each other.
The paper itself has been co-authored by John Breslin, social software team leader at DERI and lecturer in engineering and informatics at NUI Galway; Andreas Harth, a former researcher at DERI and now a post-doctoral researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology; Uldis Bojars, a PhD graduate from DERI and now a researcher at the National Library of Latvia, and Stefan Decker, DERI’s director.
