Biomedical researcher Prof Marcus Textor has been presented with an award from the Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation during its BioInterface 2012 conference at University College Dublin (UCD) in recognition of his biomedical research advances in the field of surface science.

Textor, who recently retired from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, has been presented with the Excellence in Surface Science award in recognition of his research that has contributed to achieving a fundamental understanding of how the body interacts with implanted materials. The award also recognised how his research has contributed to the development of new devices.

The Excellence in Surface Science award was established by the US-based Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation in 1991 to recognise a researcher who has advanced the field of surface science in the biomedical sciences or who has advanced the practical application of surface science.

The foundation is primarily an industry-focused organisation that includes more than 25 major biomedical-based companies.

More than 200 delegates attended the biointerface conference, which was held at UCD over the past three days. This was the first time the conference was held outside of the US since it was first established in 1991.

Dan Hook, principal scientist at Bausch & Lomb and president of the Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation, said one of the reasons the foundation chose Ireland was the “strength” of its medical device industry.
