A team of model aircraft engineers has built a scaled-down version of the helicarrier used by fictional intelligence and defence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. in the hit movie The Avengers.

The superhero collective’s primary base of operations in the Marvel Universe, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier is capable of flight, as well as operating as a traditional aircraft carrier. The new model has been created by Flite Test, a team that prolifically builds and flies model planes.

In a video posted via Facebook, the drone aircraft carrier takes off and hovers above ground, and a second drone – a more traditional radio-controlled airplane – then takes off from the mid-air runway. The team has promised a future podcast dedicated to the project.

The model comes just weeks after a real working Hoverboard akin to Back to the Future character Marty McFly’s favoured form of transportation was unveiled. The future is truly now.
