Facebook acquires Gowalla to boost Timeline experience

3 Dec 2011

Social networking giant Facebook has acquired Texas-headquartered location technology company Gowalla. Under the deal almost all of Gowalla’s staff will relocate to Facebook’s Silicon Valley headquarters to focus on the development of Timeline.

There are strong parallels between what Gowalla’s travel and location app can do and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s presentation at F8 in recent months where he demonstrated how Timeline, in telling the story of your life, perfectly demonstrates a person’s love of travel.

Facebook is clearly hard at work endeavouring to ensure that when Timeline arrives it provides the perfect narrative for the user’s life story. This narrative will be told via apps, especially mobile apps.

Speaking with Siliconrepublic.com recently, the director of Facebook’s Developer Network Ethan Beard said that Timeline’s apps will be more mobile than web.

“We think that a lot of the apps that are being built to help people build out their Timeline, some of those apps are more mobile apps than web apps,” Beard said.
