Rovio’s CEO today revealed that Amazing Alex, the long-awaited follow-up to the successful Angry Birds, is set for release in just two months.
What better week than this for Rovio to announce a new game in development when its phenomenal hit Angry Birds has reached 1bn downloads.
In a blog post thanking fans for helping it reach the 1bn milestone, Rovio included a video teaser of what might be next on the cards. The short animation begins with a close-up of a screen while someone played Angry Birds. The shot then pans out to reveal a blond boy who looks at the viewer and gives the thumbs up.
Speculation immediately began with keen-eyed fans noticing a similarity to the lead character from Casey’s Contraptions, a game recently purchased by Rovio.
This morning, active minds were put at ease as CEO Mikael Hed revealed on Finnish television that the new game will be called Amazing Alex and is set for release in two months’ time.
The new franchise will have an educational slant, so will be a new challenge for the Finnish game studio. “The quality pressure is high,” said Held. “We want to maintain the high standard Angry Birds fans have come to enjoy.”
Promising adventures following a curious young boy who loves to build things, it sounds like Amazing Alex will be largely developing on the world already created by Casey’s Contraptions, where players solve puzzles to help Casey to create Rube Goldberg-like machines using toys and everyday items.
