Twitter is down, as company says it’s working to fix outage

26 Jul 2012

The social network Twitter is down. The company says its engineers are currently working to resolve the issue. No information has been given as to when Twitter is expected to be up and running again, or the reason for the service disruption.

In a statement update regarding the outage, Twitter had this to say on its status page: “Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.”

While some users in America might be waking up to find they are not able to send out their usual tweets and greets, European users have had a good run on the site today.

In June Twitter dismissed reports that hackers caused it to go offline at around 9am PDT (5pm GMT) on 21 June and said the outage was due to a software problem known as a “cascading bug”.

At the time one Twitter user described the two-hour outage as the closest thing to living without oxygen … So where will the Twittersphere flock to, during today’s outage? During the June disruption, many veered over to Facebook.

Google also experienced an outage today on its messaging service Google Talk (Gtalk). Google had this to say on its Apps Status Page: “Google Talk service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future.”
