Twitter users from around the world, from celebrities to the not-quite-as-famous, have taken to the microblogging site to express their joy or disappointment at the news that Barack Obama has been re-elected president of the United States.
While Obama emerged victorious over Mitt Romney, a new record was set on Twitter, with more than 327,000 tweets a minute.
A tweet from Obama’s account that announces the election result by simply stating “four more years” and includes a photo of Obama hugging his wife, Michelle, has become his most retweeted post ever, attracting 524,449 retweets and 177,884 favourites.
