UPC has signed content licensing agreements with Warner Bros Home Entertainment and 20th Century Fox to bring their movies to the cable service provider’s on-demand TV service. UPC revealed that locally in Ireland use of its on-demand service has soared to 8m views.
As a result of the deals, new movies being added include Warner Bros Pictures’ Wrath of the Titans and Rock of Ages, and 20th Century Fox’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and This Means War. UPC already has major content deals with Paramount, Sony Pictures, Disney and Universal.
Other big movie attractions coming to UPC On Demand will include Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Men in Black III, The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man.
The addition of the new movie deal comes as satellite broadcasting rival Sky’s on-demand service also rolls out, enabling anyone with a DSL connection to get the latest movies, boxsets and documentaries instantaneously.
In addition, Netflix launched its on-demand service for Irish users with connected devices early this year.
The onset of new on-demand services from various providers signals the demise of linear TV scheduling as we knew it.
“UPC On Demand customers are throwing away the TV rule book and scheduling their viewing around their own busy lifestyles,” said Simon Kelehan, UPC’s head of content.
UPC launched its on-demand service four months ago and the company says it has already clocked up 8m views and 77pc of customers capable of receiving on-demand services have used the service.
