CoderDojo, the international coding movement that was started in Cork a year ago and now sees more than 6,000 children around the world learn how to write software every weekend, has published an app in the Apple iOS App Store.
The new app, which can be accessed on iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices, contains the latest CoderDojo news, tweets, images, access to kids’ coding resources and a CoderDojo locator.
CoderDojo was set up by then-19-year-old entrepreneur James Whelton and fellow entrepreneur and investor Bill Liao just a year ago in response to the lack of ICT training taking place in Irish schools.
Little did they know it would go international at light speed. There are now 104 dojos happening every Saturday afternoon (41 in Ireland) in cities from Dublin to Florence, and Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, London and Chicago. New ones are sprouting up in Jamaica and Africa.
On any given Saturday, more than 6,000 children around the world learn how to write software.
Shara Karasic of CoderDojo LA said the kids of CoderDojo inspired the app.
“We’d love to have kids help us add cool stuff for future releases,” she said.
“For the next version we want to add a coding quiz section and have CoderDojo kids contribute questions … and more!” she said.
