Bank of Ireland has revealed a new enhancement to its mobile banking app that allows customers to transfer money simply by using their mobile phone numbers.
Bank of Ireland says it is the first bank in the country to offer such as service to customers.
The move follows significant investment in its online channels in 2012 during which it launched secure messaging and e-statements.
The original mobile banking app was launched in May 2012, and is already being used by more than 160,000 Bank of Ireland customers, with almost 30pc using the app on a daily basis.
“We recognise that our customers want greater control and Pay to Mobile is a simple way for our customers to transfer money to friends or family without having to know, or input, their card or account details,” said Gavin Kelly, head of Direct Channels at Bank of Ireland.
According to the Irish Internet Association’s State of the Net, individual smartphone adoption in Ireland is now at 43pc and predicted to climb to 71pc by the end of December 2012.
