Eircom reveals winners of 2013 Junior Spider Awards

Students from schools across Ireland have today been awarded for their online innovation in the 2013 Eircom Junior Spider Awards. The digital innovators who hail from primary and secondary schools in nine Irish counties were recognised at a ceremony in the RDS in Dublin today.

The awards are an output of the Golden Spider Awards and are segmented into the Mega Spiders, the Giga Spiders and the Tera Spiders.

The ‘Mega Spiders’ are for primary school students and has three categories: Best School Blog, Best Project and Best School Website.

For secondary school students the awards are split across two categories. The ‘Giga Spiders’ are open to students who are either in first, second or third year, while the ‘Tera Spiders’ are open to students from 4th to 6th year.

The Giga and Tera Spiders reward students under the categories of Best Concept, Best Project and Best Web Design. The Suiomh Is Fearr award rewards students for the best site using the Irish language. The Tera Spiders also has the Best App award and the three categories have an overall Grand Prix winner.

So here’s a round-up of this year’s winners:

Mega Spiders

  • Best Project was won by Augustine’s National School, Clontuskert, Galway for its project ‘Life on a Ringfort in Clontuskert’
  • Best School Blog was won by Brigid’s National School in Greystones, Co Wicklow, for its blog “If Only the Best Birds Sang’  
  • St Cronan’s Junior National School in Swords, Co Dublin, won Best School Website

Giga Spiders

  • Libramatic, a project led by Shane Curran from Terenure College in Dublin, won Best Concept.
  • Coláiste an Chraoibhín in Fermoy, Co Cork, won Best Project for its War Horse project
  • Presentation College Carlow won the Best Web Design award for Synergy Racing
  • Suiomh is Fearr went to the Irish Exam Guide project from St Colman’s College in Claremorris, Co Mayo

Tera Spiders

  • Best Concept went St Mary’s CBS in Portlaoise, Co Laois, for A Better Exam
  • Best Project went to St. Wolstan’s Community School in Celbridge, Co Kildare, for its St. Brigid project
  • Best Web Design went to Holy Family Community School in Rathcoole, Co Dublin, for Geek of Comedy
  • Suiomh is Fearr went to Coláiste Íosagáin in Booterstown, Co Dublin, for Níos Aclaí, Anois  
  • Cookstown High School in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, won Best App for EcoSmart

Grand Prix winners

  • St Brigid’s National School in Greystones, Co Wicklow, won the Grand Prix in the Mega Spiders category for ‘If Only the Best Birds Sang’
  • Terenure College, Dublin won the Grand Prix in the Giga Spiders category for Libramatic  
  • Holy Family Community School in Rathcoole, Co Dublin, won the Grand Prix in the Tera Spiders category for Geek of Comedy

The student behind the Geek of Comedy project is Lee-Loi Chieng (pictured). In 2010 he was the Grand Prix winner in the Giga Spiders.

Lee-Loi’s website, Geek of Comedy, reviews the latest technology products on the market and provides video tutorials and blogs on topics such as how to install Windows 8.
