The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the US today announced the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and streaming-platform-turned-production house Netflix is celebrating a grand total of 14 nominations for House of Cards, Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove.
House of Cards is the runaway success story for Netflix with nine Emmy nominations to its credit. The Netflix Original Series is in the running for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (for Kevin Spacey) and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (for Robin Wright). This is the first time any of these three awards have been contested by an online-only series.
David Fincher has received a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and the show’s casting directors also received a nod for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. Among the technical awards, the series’ cinematography, editing, musical composition and theme music also received nominations.
Cult comedy Arrested Development, which was recently revived by Netflix for a fourth season, received three nominations, with Jason Bateman up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and the show’s editing and music composition also up for awards.
Finally, Hemlock Grove, a horror TV series from Eli Roth, received nominations for Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
The 14 nominations for Netflix-produced TV shows is a significant honour considering internet TV wasn’t even eligible for consideration in the Emmys until 2008 when the rules were changed.
“We are overwhelmed with 14 nominations and honoured by a warm welcome which corroborates what we have always believed: that great television is great television regardless of where, when and how it is enjoyed,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
