Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited is now available to users in Ireland and the UK. Like a Spotify or Netflix for books, the all-you-can-read subscription service offers limitless access to 650,000 titles and thousands of audiobooks for a flat monthly fee.
Although signing up permantly will set subscribers back £7.99 (approximately €10) a month, Amazon are currently offering a 30-day free trial to entice bookworms to take the plunge. Up to ten books can be kept at any given time and there are no due dates.
Customers interested in signing up don’t actually need to own a Kindle device. The service is also accessible via phone, tablet and computer with Amazon’s free Kindle apps.
Kindle Unlimited launched in the US in July. Just a few days before the service was officially unveiled, test pages were accidentally posted on Amazon’s site giving potential users a preview of the pricing and what titles were available.
That same month, a study produced by Author Earnings revealed that self-published authors now account for 31pc of total daily e-book sales on Amazon. Some 40pc of all earnings are going to indie authors. This makes indie authors, as a cohort, the largest publisher of e-books on Amazon.com in terms of market share.
