In what can be considered a major honour for Ireland, the chairman of the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) John Doherty will also chair the European Regulators Group (ERG) of 27 nations in 2010.
During 2009, Doherty (pictured) will serve as deputy chair of the ERG, before becoming chairman of the organisation in 2010.
“It is a great honour and reflects the high regard that ComReg is held in by its peers, both at a European and international level,” Doherty commented on his appointment.
The ERG consists of regulators from the 27 EU member countries. It was established by the European Commission to act as an advisory group and to assist the Commission in developing the internal market for electronic communications.
The ERG consists of the regulators of the 27 EU countries, along with the fourEuropean Free Trade Association (EFTA) states (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) and three EU Candidate States (Turkey, Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).
The ERG was established in 1997 to share experiences and points of view among its members on important issues relating to the regulation and development of the European telecommunications market.
