MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2010, BARCELONA – Irish mobile technology company Cibenix has struck major deals with some of the world’s largest mobile operators to enable them to generate revenue from alternative services beyond communications.
The venture-capital backed company, which employs 25 people, has struck deals with major operators like Vodafone and O2, as well as Airtel Bharti in India, the world’s third-largest mobile operator.
Cibenix’s Michael Goulding explained that the company’s On Device Services technology is helping operators to sell more services and overcome their perception as mere communications providers.
“Operators’ big fear is they’ll become dumb pipes and won’t have a significant presence on the devices their customers are carrying. Our app allows operators to have a presence, brand them and present all services they have.
“The mobile industry is growing absolutely enormously. The opportunities in mobile are huge. Everything is mobile,” Goulding said.
Generating revenue from apps to ads
Goulding explained that the company’s latest ODS app is being targeted to help operators generate significant revenues from apps to advertising from new smart phone devices, particularly the latest Android devices.
“We consider ourselves in the revenue-discovery business. Operators have spent their money on infrastructure and licences. Voice ARPU is declining and they need to make money from data services. Our ODS technology helps them to set up various services on the homescreen of their device.
“The technology allows them to present all these services to the user. It gives the operator presence on the mobile device and allows them to brand and advertise,” Goulding said.
“It’s amazing when you see Windows 7, iPhone, Android, Nokia with the QT, all presenting users with incredible experiences, from email to Facebook and web browsing. Our technology effectively allows mobile operators to design their own user interface with a view to selling more services effectively.”
