There will be no update or follow up to the Google Nexus One smartphone for the foreseeable future, Google CEO Eric Schmidt says.
Last year, when Google released the Nexus One smartphone running on its Android mobile operating system with hardware designed by HTC, it marked the first time the search engine giant brought a physical consumer product to market but now, one year on, Schmidt says there are no plans to release a new one.
The reason for no Nexus Two is this: “It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one,” Schmidt was quoted as saying in the Telegraph.
“We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: ‘OK, it worked. Congratulations – we’re stopping’. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale,” he added in the Telegraph interview.
Meanwhile, HTC has gone on to create newer and better Android models of its own, including the Desire, Wildfire and most recently, the Evo 4G.
The Nexus One originally went on sale through Google’s dedicated online store but this recently shut down after just four months in operation while the handset never went on sale in Ireland with no plans to release it here in the immediate future.
