Podcast enthusiasts and audiophiles alike are rather pleased with the news that one of the most popular podcasts of all time, Serial, has returned for its second season just before Christmas.
It’s been over a year since we last heard the voice of Sarah Koenig ponder the validity of the Adnan Sayed murder case, but now Serial season two is with us, bringing a whole new story to get slightly obsessed by.
The first season of the podcast became a viral hit earlier this year – racking up more than 68m downloads and picking up a Peabody Award for its investigative reporting on the case, becoming the first podcast in history to do so.
The examination by Koenig and her team even led to the evidence brought forward by them being re-examined in court due to the possibility that Adnan might not have murdered his then girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in 1999.
There are currently discussions ongoing to make the podcast, which was a spin-off from the already popular podcast This American Life, into a TV show charting its huge success.
The life of Bowe Bergdahl
But, in the meantime, we now have a whole new story to listen to.
“In the middle of the night, Pfc Bowe Bergdahl grabs a notebook, snacks, water, some cash,” reads the description for the first episode of the new series, entitled DUSTWUN. “Then he quietly slips off a remote US Army outpost in eastern Afghanistan and into the dark, open desert. About 20 minutes later, it occurs to him: he’s in over his head.”
Bergdahl is a particularly controversial figure in the American military as he was once a prisoner of war in Afghanistan following his walk-out of his base in 2009, which the military claims resulted in the death of six other military personnel.
Rather than being a purely investigatory piece, this season of Serial is expected to try and delve into the mind of Bergdahl and why he decided to walk out of his military base in the first place.
