A special 3D episode of Doctor Who will be created to mark 50 years of the beloved television show in November this year, and will be broadcast using some of the BBC’s HD capacity.
The 3D instalment will be broadcast on 23 November 2013 – exactly 50 years after the first episode of the long-running series aired. Viewers at home will be able to tune in via BBC’s HD channel, while select cinemas will also screen the landmark episode.
“It’s about time,” said lead writer and executive producer of the current series Steven Moffat. “Technology has finally caught up with Doctor Who and your television is now bigger on the inside. A whole new dimension of adventure for the doctor to explore.”
The announcement came from BBC’s controller of drama Ben Stephenson at an event for writers, actors and industry press last night. The British broadcaster is apparently planning for “blockbuster celebrations” to mark the Time Lord’s half-centenary. In the meantime, the series returns to BBC One on 30 March.
