Trending news service NewsWhip has launched its free consumer iOS app which keeps users informed of the most shared and tweeted news stories across dozens of topics and countries.
NewsWhip, a start-up based at Dogpatch Labs in Dublin and in New York, is able to track some 100,000 news stories every day, ranking them on their social velocity – the amount of new interactions they’re receiving every hour.
The app can be tuned to a variety of topics of interest to the user – from tech to gossip, politics, science and fashion – and can be set to the user’s location.
NewsWhip has also added a tab called My Whips, which remembers your favourite country and topic section.
Spiking demand
NewsWhip CEO Paul Quigley told Siliconrepublic.com that an Android version of the app will arrive within four to eight weeks.
“We’re very excited about taking this next step onto mobile platforms. NewsWhip has kept millions of users up to date with the world’s most current and engaging news, and our dashboard for professional communicators, Spike, is used in newsrooms and marketing agencies across the world.
“We’re delighted to be able to extend our streams of trending news from the big screen into the hands of our users everywhere they go,” Quigley said.
