The atmosphere at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition was electric yesterday at the RDS in Dublin, as visitors and judges took in about 550 projects presented by students from all over Ireland. We talked to a selection of students about their projects.
Almost 2,000 students are competing in this year’s event, covering the categories of technology, social and behavioural sciences, chemical, physical and mathematical sciences and biological and ecological sciences.
As the students manned their stands with colourful displays, they were eager to explain all about the projects they have been working on over the past months.
And there was plenty to entertain visitors to the exhibition. Human-sized robots mingled with the crowds, while ‘The world of robots’ show entertained students in an outdoor tent. The ‘It takes guts’ show from Science Museum London looked to captivate people with the art of digestion. And members from the coding club CoderDojo were on-hand to teach visitors all about the fundamentals of coding and computer programming.
The judges were reviewing each of the 550 projects, before the ultimate awards are announced this evening. The top accolade will be awarded to the young scientist(s) of the year, followed by best individual or best group and runner-up individual and runner-up group.
The science exhibition itself will be open to the public until Saturday evening at the RDS.
