Digital Biscuit from the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) sets out to examine and explore Ireland’s potential as a creative and technological leader in innovative film and television production, with contributions from leading figures in the creative industry both nationally and globally.
The three-day event takes place for the first time this month with a programme of talks, free workshops, product launches, training classes and technology expositions. There will be a public open space where the likes of Canon, Wacom, HP, Apple and Sony will exhibit their leading technologies used in the creative industry.
A number of acclaimed film industry professionals will be hosted by the event, including Oscar-winning animator and visual effects supervisor Richard Baneham (Avatar); Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Chris Nee (creator of Doc McStuffins); Darragh O’Connell from two-time Oscar nominee Brown Bag Films; author Robert Levine (Free Ride: How the Internet Is Destroying the Culture Business and How the Culture Business Can Fight Back); and directors David Yates (who directed the final four Harry Potter films), Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father) and Ciaran Donnelly (The Tudors).
Donnelly is also the director and chairman of SDGI. “Digital Biscuit will place creatives at its core while also serving as a digital expo for new technologies,” he said. “We want to improve the production capabilities of our most talented creators from the simplest ideas to the highest budgets.”
Digital Biscuit will open on Thursday, 24 January, at the IFI, Dublin, with the Irish premiere of Side by Side, a new documentary produced by Keanu Reeves. The film takes an in-depth look at the revolution of digital cinema and the screening will be followed by a talk and, potentially, a lively debate.
The schedule of events continues until 26 January in the Science Gallery and a Young Animators Award and Short Filmmaker Award will be presented during the event. Submissions will be accepted up to 18 January and 20 January respectively.
