Xbox One update to include new Snap features and TV improvements

16 Oct 2014

Microsoft is preparing to roll out a new update for the Xbox One that improves the game console’s Snap mode and TV features.

The changes, announced by the consumer tech giant’s director of programming Larry Hryb in a video, also includes changes to the achievements app and support for DLNA streaming.

The Snap Center will now include quick access to a gamer’s friends list, messages, game DVR, clock and battery indicator. Opening and closing snap apps in-game has also been made easier

As well as supporting DLNA streaming, which allows users to access material on home media servers and devices that support the DLNA server protocols, the Xbox One will now be able to playback MKV files stored on a USB device or a device on home networks that supports DLNA streaming.

Last month, Xbox One become the first foreign games console released in China in 14 years. A ban on foreign-made gaming machines came into force in 2000 following parental outcry surrounding the potential mental-health effects of gaming on children. By becoming the first console released since the ban was lifted, Microsoft has stolen a march on Sony’s PlayStation 4 in a potentially huge new market.
