Tesco’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) business in Ireland has just signed up its 250,000th customer.
Tesco Mobile Ireland has reported a growth of 50,000 customers in one year.
Citing the latest quarterly report for Ireland’s communications watchdog ComReg, the company’s share of the Irish mobile market has grown from 4.3pc to 5pc.
The MVNO is a joint venture between Tesco and Three, which has just acquired mobile operator O2 from Telefónica for €850m.
The key to the expansion has been the availability of call credit in more than 5,000 locations across Ireland, according to Tesco Ireland managing director Elaine Russell.
She said the company will be growing its dedicated Tesco Phone Shops to 20 stores by the end of the year, as well as opening an online store.
“Our commitment to providing customers with great value without compromise is being recognised and we are confident we will continue with this growth supported by our Tesco Phone Shop expansion,” Russell said.
“In the last 12 months, 13 dedicated Phone Shops have opened within Tesco stores, bringing to 19 the total number of Tesco Phone Shops across the country. By the end of 2014 we will have 20 phone shops in Tesco stores and this investment is delivering 15 new jobs.”
