Video-on-demand usage in Ireland has reached a tipping point, with consumption growing to almost 60pc of the population, a new study commissioned on behalf of RTÉ Digital reveals.

Overall video-on-demand (VoD) usage, which includes various TV players as well as services like Netflix, has increased 13pc in the last three months and by more than one-third in the last 12 months.

The survey, conducted by Behaviour and Attitudes, showed that overall usage on RTÉ Player has increased by 18pc in the same period, with 1.3m adults having used the service.

The survey shows that the majority of users of RTÉ Player are aged under 50 years, with 59pc of its audience aged 25-49.

“The research carried out by Behaviour and Attitudes shows great results for RTÉ Player, with its growth in popularity outpacing overall growth in the VoD marketplace” said Conor Mullen, commercial director RTÉ Digital.

RTÉ Player is now available on Android, iOS, Samsung Connected TV, online, UPC, and Xbox 360, and can be accessed from about 2,000 different devices.

RTÉ Player’s usage is strongest in the under-35s. The RTÉ Player is used by 58pc of under-24s, and 48pc of the 24-35 age group. Forty-two per cent of the RTÉ Player audience has children in the household.
