Net neutrality advocate Susan Crawford, the former technology adviser to US President Barack Obama, will be at Science Gallery in Dublin this evening to talk about the US approach to investing in technology. She will also be comparing the US approach with Ireland’s approach – focusing on areas such as internet access and censorship.
Crawford was special assistant to Obama for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy in 2009. As well as this, she co-led the FCC transition team between the Bush and Obama administrations.
Right now she is a member of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s advisory council on technology and innovation.
She is in Dublin to talk at Science Galley, which is based on the Trinity College Dublin campus, as part of Science Foundation Ireland’s speaker series at the gallery.
Crawford is currently a visiting Stanton professor at Harvard Kennedy School, while she is also a visiting professor at Harvard Law School.
In addition, she is a co-director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard.
Her forthcoming book Captive Audience: Telecom Monopolies in the New Gilded Age is to be available in early 2013.
Crawford has been blogging and publishing articles about telecommunications and the future of the internet since 2003.
She is also the founder of OneWebDay, a global Earth Day for the internet that takes place each year on 22 September.
This evening’s event at Science Gallery will start at 6pm and there is a fee of €5 to attend.
