Irish company Kelly Steel Engineering is to employ 70 engineers and project managers in the Middle East after having won a €16m contract to build a 3,500-tonne baggage handling facility at Abu Dhabi’s new airport.
Kelly Steel Engineering’s managing director John O’Kelly said many of the engineers recruited to work on the project will be from Ireland. The company is said to have the largest Irish-born private-sector workforce in all of the United Arab Emirates.
Work on the new baggage handling facility will begin in January and is scheduled to be completed in April 2016. This project is one of Kelly Steel Engineering’s largest projects to date.
O’Kelly added the company’s links with Irish third-level institutions, such as University College Dublin and Dublin City University, will give future engineers internships and hands-on, practical work experience and at its sites in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah.
The new work opens up significant new opportunities for other graduates, O’Kelly said.
“We support Irish graduates and undergraduates every way we can and we are a sponsor of the Dubai Celts GAA club which is a very sociable and a great network for young Irish people who relocate here,” he said.
