Robot rock duo Daft Punk’s latest single, released at 12.01am ET (5.01am Irish time) on Friday 19 April, has reached No 1 in the iTunes chart in 14 countries, conquered the top five in six others, and broken Spotify’s record for most streams of a track in its first 24 hours.
While exact figures have not been revealed, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Daft Punk has taken the record previously held by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s ‘Thrift Shop’ in the US and Bastille’s ‘Pompeii’ in the UK. ‘Get Lucky’, which features rapper and producer Pharrell Williams on lead vocals and disco legends Chic’s Nile Rodgers on guitar, is now the track with the most first-day streams on Spotify worldwide.
The track is also seeing success on iTunes, heading straight to No 1 in Ireland, the UK, France, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, and reaching the top five in the US, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway.
‘Get Lucky’ comes from the French duo’s new album Random Access Memories, which has been building up a lot of hype ahead of its 21 May release. The yet-to-be-released album even appears in iTunes ‘Top Albums’ recommendations.
Since Human After All in 2005, Daft Punk released a live album in 2007 and scored the soundtrack to Tron: Legacy in 2010, but Random Access Memories is what fans have been waiting eight years for. After a week of leaks and teasers, ‘Get Lucky’ was well-received upon its release on Friday, which also saw the first public performance of the track at a HTC One concert in Brooklyn, New York – albeit from Williams only.
It’s expected that the album will be the biggest to hit Spotify, and if you’re not yet sure of the hype, have a listen yourself:
