The internet and whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks are among the record 241 people and organisations that have been nominated to receive a Nobel Peace Prize in 2011.
The European Union and Russian human rights group Memorial are also among those nominated for the prestigious award.
Other known individuals nominated include Afghan rights advocate Dr Sima Samar, former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, Cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya Sardinas, and Memorial’s founder Svetlana Gannushkina.
Rumours are circulating that certain social networking sites could also be awarded for the role they have played in uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, giving peaceful protesters a voice and means of communication.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee confirmed today it had received valid nominations of 188 individuals and 53 organisations for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011.
Nominations can be accepted from all national parliaments, professors of law or political science and previous winners.
The recipient, or recipients of the prize, will be awarded in October.
