iPad 2 launch delayed until June – claims from Taiwan

22 Feb 2011

Production bottlenecks at manufacturer Hon Hai due to the iPad 2’s new design are going to result in the device not debuting until June, Taiwanese analyst Yuanta Securities has claimed.

According to emerging reports, component makers have been forced to change their production processes after Apple made design changes to the iPad 2 at the beginning of February.

Yuanta’s head of downstream tech equities Vincent Chen said new issues are being encountered with the new production process and it is taking time to resolve them.

If the launch of the iPad 2 is delayed by two months, total iPad shipments would be 23m units this year, down from the broker’s original forecast of 30.6m units.

iPad accounted for 17pc of Apple’s revenues

The iPad, which was launched early last year, accounted for 17pc of Apple’s revenues in the last quarter with more than 7m of the devices shipped.

The new model is expected to have cameras on the front and back of the device and would have a better resolution display than the first iPad.
