Sony Ericsson officially unveiled the Xperia PLAY yesterday, which will run on Gingerbread and offer PlayStation gaming on a smartphone.
The Xperia Play has a slide-out gaming controller, which includes a digital D pad, two analogue touchpads, two shoulder buttons and the four standard PlayStation buttons – circle, X, square and triangle.
It offers a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with an embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor for 60fps play-back 3D mobile gaming.
The Xperia PLAY also promises a long battery life to extend game time.
The phone has a 4-inch touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera and will run on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread.)
Marked as the first “PlayStation-certified device,” it will have access to the PlayStation Suite, which will be launched later in 2011.
A pre-loaded app will allow users to discover and download titles optimised for the device, access recently played games and see information on games they downloaded onto the device.
Sony Ericsson has partnered with publishers to bring gaming content to the device, such as EA’s Need for Speed, The Sims 3 and a multiplayer FIFA 10 for mobile phones.
GLEU Mobile/Activision will bring Guitar Hero to the device and Gameloft will offer Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell.
Other content partners include Fishlabs, PopCap Games and Namco Bandai Networks.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY will be available globally from March 2011.
