Sharp to release e-reading tablet computers

27 Sep 2010

Sharp has introduced a tablet-like computer called Galapagos, which comes in a few sizes to rival the iPad and the Sony’s Reader.

Sharp announced the device at an event in Tokyo. The Galapagos will be Wi-Fi only and will operate on the Android platform.

It will be available in both 5.5 inches and 10.8 inches and will be released in December.

The larger model has a 1,366 x 800 widescreen display and the smaller has a 1,024 x 600 display, along with a trackball controller.

They will also have an e-book service which will initially offer 30,000 books, magazines and newspapers, and plan to expand it to movies, music and games.

Sharp wishes to sell 1 million units in 2011 and is considering launching it overseas. It is in negotiations with US firm Verizon Communications.
