Wi-Fi operator BitBuzz has reported a 25pc increase in registered users in the first half of 2010, bringing to 271,272 its total user base.

In the past 12 months, Bitbuzz has experienced a 56pc increase in its user base, indicating continued growth for the company.

The number of Bitbuzz Wi-Fi hotspots at the end of June 2010 was 223, up from 204 at the end of 2009.

They also registered an average of 21 logins per site per business day, which was up from their 2009 figure of 11.

Shane Deasy, managing director of Bitbuzz, said he was happy with these figures, particularly during this challenging economic climate.

“We are delighted to be experiencing continued growth,” Deasy said.

“The Wi-Fi index reached an all-time high in June, reflecting strong growth in usage in our daytime Wi-Fi venues and three-star hotels.

“On the basis of activity during the current quarter, we are confident that this trend will continue, particularly with the increased popularity of smartphones and netbooks,” he said.

Bitbuzz announced a number of deals during the first half of 2010, including contracts with the Cartlon Hotel Group, Druids Glen Resort Hotel, Costa Coffee stores throughout Northern Ireland and an upgraded hotspot at The Merrion Hotel.
