Amazon has today announced a newer, better Kindle e-book device with 50pc better display contrast and a lower price of US$379.
The new Kindle from Amazon uses improved E Ink Pearl display technology, making it the lowest power display on the market with the most natural-looking electronic text to simulate printed paper.
E Ink Pearl will mean that devices using this display can be more lightweight and eco-friendly than printed paper, but also give less eye strain and be less of a drain on battery life than traditional LCD.
Felix Ho, the chairman of E Ink, said that as the electronic reader market continues to expand, there are more opportunities not only for e-books but also for e-newspapers, e-magazines and e-textbooks.
“There’s no turning back once you read on our beautiful new Kindle DX screen,” said Steve Kessel, senior vice-president, Amazon Kindle.
“With 50pc better contrast and darker fonts, you’ll find it easier than ever to read wherever you happen to be, whether it’s outside in bright sunlight or under the low light of your living room. We’re excited to offer the new Kindle DX with free 3G wireless at the lower price of $379.”
The Kindle DX allows for one week’s worth of reading on a single charge with wireless turned on or two weeks with wireless switched off and the device itself is almost as thin as the average magazine.
It can store up to 3,500 books or documents, and has global 3G coverage so no charges are incurred for downloading e-books to the Kindle if you’re travelling abroad.
