Irish forecourt retailer Applegreen has signed a €2m renewable energy deal with Energia.
Under the contract, Energia will supply Applegreen’s network of more than 70 forecourt locations, including its operations at the M4 and M1 motorway service areas, with energy derived from renewable sources.
“Applegreen has an ongoing commitment to improving the company’s energy efficiencies by embracing green technologies and improving energy awareness amongst employees,” said Trevor Moore, head of operations, Applegreen.
“In recent years, we have invested in several initiatives, including recycling water in our carwashes and being the first forecourt retailer in Ireland to install energy-efficient forecourt canopy LED lighting.”
Alan Mulcahy, business markets manager, Energia, said the company has seen the number of green energy deals increase significantly recently. In response, the company, which is owned by Viridian, will increase its renewable energy portfolio by more than 268MW. The vast majority of this, 243MW, will come from 26 new Irish wind farms that will become operational during 2011.
“We are already one of the top suppliers of green power to businesses in Ireland,” he said. “We have 300MW of operational capacity at the moment and will be increasing this by another 540MW over this year and next.”
Included in the terms of the deal will be the use of Energia’s new online multi-site energy management tool. This will allow Applegreen to keep track of its energy consumption and expenditure over a number of locations.
According to Energia, it currently has a 28pc market share of the business electricity and gas market on an all–island basis with more than 65,000 customers. In addition to renewable assets, the company also operates a 750MW gas-fired power station in north Dublin.
