With the 31 October tax deadline approaching, the Revenue Commissioners are warning of a fraudulent email scam that operates in connection with a convincing reproduction of its website.
A phishing email seeking personal information from taxpayers in connection with a tax refund is doing the rounds.
The email’s subject line reads, “You are eligible to receive a tax refund of €320.50” and links to a credible reproduction of the www.revenue.ie website.
It asks recipients to submit personal details, including date of birth and debit/credit-card details.
Revenue is warning that the email is not from them and is just the latest in a succession of scams targeting Irish taxpayers.
It is advising that anyone who receives an email purporting to be from Revenue and suspects it to be fraudulent or a scam should simply delete it.
Anyone who is actually awaiting a tax refund should contact their local Revenue office to check its status.
Anyone who provided personal information in response to these fraudulent emails is advised to contact their bank or credit-card company immediately.
