In the first three days of its US launch, Apple’s third-generation smartphone, the iPhone 3G S, has sold over one million models.
Here in Ireland, the iPhone 3G S won’t be making its way into O2 Stores and our hands until 26 June, but the iPhone operating system update – OS 3.0 – has already been downloaded over six million times globally within the first five days of the first release.
An element of surprise that added to the excitement of the iPhone 3G S launch was a comment from CEO Steve Jobs on its success, the first public statement he has made since taking medical leave in January.
Jobs, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, was recovering after a liver transplant, and simply said: “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning. With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”
The iPhone 3GS will be available in Ireland exclusively from O2 with varying price points and data plans, starting from €79 for the 16GB model.
The new smartphone has a 3-megapixel camera with video-recording capabilities, a built-in digital compass that will work with GPS for an improved Google Maps experience, and voice control for selecting iTunes tracks and making voice calls.
