Irish Virgin Media customers who have signed up to receive the Horizon package can now access the vast catalogue of Netflix through an on-screen menu.
Following a week dealing with a massive, national technical fault to its broadband service, Virgin Media Ireland could be about to make amends with some of its Irish customers.
The Horizon TV service is Virgin Media’s premium television box that is now being used by around half of its customers in the country, and it will now add another string to its bow – or box – by enabling users to stream Netflix content on it as well.
While it has become increasingly more common for the latest smart TVs to come with an in-built Netflix app, customers who own an older TV have been left with the choice of either hooking up their laptop to the screen via a HDMI cable or transmitting it through a streaming device.
Right in time for Christmas
From today, Horizon customers will be able to watch Netflix content by going to either channel 999 or 300. It does not require any extra fee, except for the existing Netflix subscription fee.
Ireland is the first country in the Liberty Global group to offer Netflix to customers before it is rolled out to over 30 countries in the coming months.
Virgin Media Ireland’s vice-president Paul Farrell said of the deal: “This brings your Netflix streaming subscription straight onto your TV. With thousands of films, box sets and TV shows to watch instantly, it’s one of the best ways to enjoy all your favourites.
“Netflix is even better when you can watch it seamlessly on Virgin Media’s Horizon TV service or you can watch it on any device anytime, anywhere you can get online.”
This news follows Netflix’s announcement that it was to make a considerable number of its TV shows and films available for download on mobile devices.
