The availability of jobs is one thing. Landing a job is something else entirely. So how can you secure a brand new role?
In a relatively quiet week for jobs, just 170 new roles were announced across Ireland, with e-commerce giant Pitney Bowes carrying the bulk of those. Tech company OpenJaw and fintech firm Redline round out the rest.
The Irish OpenJaw announcement came amid news of a global expansion, which will see 200 new roles added to the company’s books.
We also took a more theoretical view of jobs – not the jobs that are available, but, rather, the jobs you could have – with five data science-related roles that may surprise you.
Of course, as always, the availability of jobs is just one part of the puzzle. It’s, say, 10pc. The other 90pc? Actually getting the job.
To make that a little easier for those who are struggling to find work, LinkedIn this week poured €180,000 into non-profit Jobcare, which assists jobseekers who are facing challenges.
There’s also some more specific prep you can do if you’re targeting a particular role or area.

To provide some inspiration, we also spoke to Bristol-Myers Squibb bioprocess associate Cheryl Hyland, who gave us an insight into what her days working for a pharma giant are like.
In the great arc of career development, what happens after you land a job can be just as important as the act of landing it. This week, we asked, ‘if a company has a bad culture, will that affect your prospects?’
A company’s culture can also have a detrimental effect on staff health. We looked at that in detail, offering ways for management to manage overall stress levels, and improve employees’ health.
